Greer Tabbed National Freshman Of The Year By Inside Lacrosse

Rookie has 57 goals and 14 assists this season

May 28, 2005

Duke rookie attackman Zack Greer has been named the National Freshman of the Year by Inside Lacrosse magazine, announced on Saturday by the publication.

Greer, a native of Whitby, Ontario, Canada, has scored a nation-leading 57 goals on the year including a team-best four in Duke's 19-8 national semifinal victory over Maryland on Saturday afternoon. Greer has established new Duke and ACC single-season records with his 57 tallies, breaking the previous school mark of 53 set by John Fay in 1997 and the league standard of 56 set by Virginia's Doug Knight in 1996. The 57 goals rank Greer 10th on the NCAA's single-season goal scoring chart.

"It isn't a secret that Zack has had a tremendous impact on our program this year," said Duke head coach Mike Pressler. "He has the unique ability to make everyone around him a better lacrosse player, and without a doubt he is one of the most mature and advanced freshmen I have been fortunate enough to coach."

For the season, Greer has 71 total points on 57 goals and 14 assists while shooting at a 49.6 percent clip. He has scored at least one goal in 18-of-19 games this season while reaching the three-goal plateau in 12 contests. In addition, Greer has 43 ground balls to his credit and four game-winning tallies while helping Duke to an NCAA record 17 victories this year.
